Careers

Careers and work-related learning

Our careers provision is underpinned by our total commitment to improve the lives of the young people of Islington. At City of London Academy Islington our careers education programme provides students with the opportunity to plan and manage their careers effectively, ensuring progression which is ambitious and aspirational.

The Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) programme is a vital part of every pupil’s education. It is mainly delivered through PSHCE lessons but is also linked to subject lessons and assemblies. Professional careers guidance is provided through an impartial Careers Adviser available to all pupils. Pupils are also encouraged to learn from experiences of work, other projects and the reviewing and recording of achievement in developing the skills they need for their future career choice and development.

The programme has been developed in line with the eight Gatsby benchmarks for ensuring best practice and to meet the requirements of the Department for Education’s statutory guidance 2018. The Gatsby Benchmarks:

  1. A stable careers programme
  2. Learning from career and labour market information
  3. Addressing the needs of each student
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
  5. Encounters with employers and employees
  6. Experience of work places
  7. Encounters with further and higher education
  8. Personal guidance

City of London Academy Islington is working towards the Quality in Careers Award and has achieved the certificate of “making good progress towards meeting all the accreditation criteria incorporating the Gatsby Benchmarks”.

COLAI policy on CEIAG: Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance recognises and conforms to the statutory guidance issued by the Department for Education in October 2018. The Career policy is due for review in September 2023.
