Exams and Results

At City of London Academy Islington we pride ourselves in having high aspirations of all pupils, regardless of their starting point. Our culture of high expectations and pursuit of excellence, combined with outstanding teaching means that our students consistently outperform national averages.

Of all the GCSE grades awarded 233 were at grade 7 or above. Eighteen students achieved a grade 7 or higher in five or more subjects and seven students who achieved a grade 8 or 9 in all core examinations (English, Maths and Science).

Progress 8

This score shows how much progress pupils at this school made across 8 qualifications between the end of key stage 2 and the end of key stage 4. The P8 score for City of London Academy Islington in 2022 was 0.18.

This is higher than the local authority (Islington) average score for state-funded schools (0.08) and the average score for all state-funded schools in England (-0.03).

Attainment 8

Schools get a score based on how well pupils have performed in up to 8 qualifications, including English, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, history, geography, modern foreign languages and 3 other GCSE or Level 2 BTEC qualifications. In 2023 our Attainment 8 score was 47.0, although this is lower than in 2022 (50.20) it still represents a significant improvement in performance compared to pre-pandemic public examinations (2019) where our Attainment 8 score was 41.1.

English and Maths GCSEs

  • A grade 4 is considered to be a standard pass and a grade 5 to be a strong pass.
  • 68% of pupils achieved a grade 4 or better in both English and Maths GCSEs
  • 48% of pupils achieved a grade 5 or better in both English and Maths GCSEs

English

  • 133 pupils (86%) achieved a grade 4 or better in their English GCSE.
  • 119 pupils (77%) achieved a grade 5 or better in their English GCSE.

Maths

  • 108 pupils (70%) achieved a grade 4 or better in their Maths GCSE.
  • 78 pupils (51%) achieved a grade 5 or better in their Maths GCSE.

English Baccalaureate

A pupil is considered to have ‘achieved’ the English Baccalaureate if they achieved a grade 4 or better in the following subjects: English, maths, the sciences, a language and either history or geography. 53% of our students were entered for the English Baccalaureate.

  • 31% of our students achieved the English Baccalaureate at a grade 4 or higher.
  • 20% of our students achieved the English Baccalaureate at a grade 5 or higher.
  • The students English Baccalaureate average point score was 4.35 (compared to 4.05 nationally)

Sixth Form

Our culture of high aspirations is also evident throughout the sixth form. Students are supported and challenged to be the best they can be.  84% of A Level grades awarded were at grade C or higher and 92% of vocational qualifications awarded were at Merit or higher.

  • 44% of students achieved at least one grade A (A Level courses) or Distinction (vocational courses) or higher and three students achieved a grade A or A* or Distinction in all of their courses.

Year 13 Destinations

32 students completed Year 13 in 2023. Of which, 25 students took places at university (78%). The students who did not progress to university, have either progressed into employment or an apprenticeship.
