The development of student literacy and a love of reading is a key focus of the Academy. All students in Year 7 and 8 will come to the Library for one lesson a week. Here they will get the opportunity to borrow books and take part in the Accelerated reader initiative where they will complete quizzes on the books they have read.

At the beginning of the term the students completed a STAR Reading test which assessed their reading level. Below are the colours that link to the students ZPD level. This guides the individual student to the books they should be reading.

Students are encouraged to read for at least 20 minutes each day.  It is very important that your child reads frequently to fully benefit from this initiative and we ask you to encourage and support them in this at home.

In September 2019 the ‘COLAI Underground Book Challenge’ was launched. This was devised to encourage children to explore a wider range of genres and new authors. If a student reads a book from the challenge and passes the quiz (70%) they will receive 3 house points. If a student gets 100% on a quiz they will receive 5 house points.

Students are also able to use the library during break times, lunch times, before and after school for homework and a quiet place to read. There are also a variant of extra curricular activities throughout the year including book clubs, chess and scrabble tournaments and manga clubs.
