Parents Workshops

Coram Islington Parenting Support Service will be running a series workshops at City of London Academy Islington for parents/carers of adolescents. The workshops aim to enable parents to find ways of supporting their teenager with a range of issues parents have told us they find most difficult to manage.

Workshops will be running at the following times:

Managing teenagers’ angry behaviour: Thursday 27th January 2011 5-6.30pm
Parents are supported to try to understand anger, why teenagers become angry, how to prevent and manage angry behaviour, as well as what to do if they further support is required

Keeping your teenager safe: Thursday 3rd February 2011 5-6.30pm
Helps parents to understand why young people may join a gang, how to prevent young people becoming involved in gangs, minimising risk, and what to do if parents are concerned that their child is already involved with a gang.

Drugs and alcohol: Thursday 10th February 2011 5-6.30pm
Looks at risks and prevention strategies, how to spot the signs of young people’s substance misuse, and what to do if parents are worried their young person is misusing substances

Talking to young people about sex and relationships: Thursday 17th February 2011 5-6.30pm
Parents are encouraged to think about what children need to know at different ages, how to respond to their children’s questions about sex and relationships, and how to find opportunities to talk to their children about it, as well as resources that are available.

Internet safety: Thursday 3rd March 2011 5-6.30pm
Explores the pros and cons of the internet, the associated risks for young people and how to minimise these.

How to use Facebook: Thursday 10th March 2011 5-6.30pm
A live demonstration helping parents to understand how Facebook works, with a focus on enabling parents to ensure their young persons’ safety as much as possible by using privacy settings appropriately.

Transition to secondary school: Thursday 17th March 2011 5-6.30pm
Helps parents to think about what they can do to support their young persons transition to secondary school, both prior to transition and during the first few months afterwards, as well as what to do and who to speak to if there are difficulties
