Information about English
English is a core subject at KS3 and KS4.
At KS3, English is mapped to the National Curriculum using the APP assessment criteria. This makes ICT exciting and challenging giving the student an insight into all forms of English whether classic, canonical literature or films and different forms of English. All of the skills learnt are transferrable to, and in preparation for the GCSEs at KS4. Units covered in KS3 English include:
At KS4, we work to the AQA GCSE syllabus for English Language and English Literature. This is a challenging, rewarding and current qualification which allows the student vital preparation for all walks of life and further study in this subject.

Units covered at KS4 are:
- Of Mice and Men
- Don’t Get Me Started On.....
- Creative Writing
- Poetry
- Shakespeare and linked texts
- A Study of Spoken Language
- Speaking and Listening
- Reading non-fiction
- An Inspector Calls
In these lessons the students learn how to interact with and analyse a series of texts. They will learn different strategies for producing their own texts and work on vital presentation skills through the development of their speaking and listening skills.
English will provide students with:
- The ability to understand and interrogate the written word
- The ability to use written and spoken English in a variety of contexts
- The ability to work independently and also in groups.
- A recognised qualification that almost all further education providers will refer to.
- A transferable skill for life.
How will you be assessed?
There are a series of controlled assessment tasks that will be completed in class. In addition to this there are terminal exams at the end of both Year 10 and 11. Additional exams are likely to be scheduled to give all students the best possible chance to succeed.
